Fi - Your AI CFO

This guide explains how Fi, your AI CFO built into Fiskl, works β€” and how to get the most from it. Fi answers questions, analyses your financial data, runs reports, and guides you through tasks, all from a single conversation.

What Is Fi?

Fi is a conversational AI built into Fiskl, connected to your live account data. It retrieves real numbers, spots patterns, and presents insights so you can make informed decisions without leaving the conversation.

Fi identifies what each question needs, retrieves the relevant data, and delivers tailored answers with supporting charts and detail. It can search the knowledge base, run accounting reports, analyse your transactions, or walk you through a task step by step β€” all determined automatically based on what you ask.

What Fi Can Do

Fi combines platform knowledge, live data access, and regional tax guidance. Some capabilities depend on your plan. See Fiskl plans.

Answer Questions About Fiskl

Fi draws on the complete Fiskl help documentation, tutorials, and FAQs. Ask about any feature and get a clear, accurate answer with relevant context.

Analyse Your Financial Data

Fi retrieves data directly from your Fiskl account. You can ask questions across your clients, invoices, expenses, and accounting transactions. Examples include:

  • "How is my business doing compared to last year?"
  • "Show me my revenue trends for the past six months"
  • "Which clients owe me the most right now?"
  • "Break down my expenses by category for Q1"
  • "What is my accounts receivable balance?"

Fi pulls the relevant numbers, runs the analysis, and responds with a summary you can act on.

Work With What Is on Your Screen

Fi sees the screen you are on. Ask about the invoice, report or transaction in front of you, and Fi answers in that context. You do not need to name the record or copy figures into the conversation.

Examples include:

  • "Why is this invoice overdue?"
  • "Explain the change in this report"
  • "Is the tax on this transaction right?"

Run Accounting Reports

Fi can generate and interpret all standard accounting reports through conversation. Ask for a profit and loss statement, balance sheet, cash flow report, trial balance, or any other report β€” Fi retrieves the data and presents the results with explanations.

You can also ask follow-up questions to explore the data further. For example, ask for a profit and loss summary and then drill into a specific expense category or compare periods.

Visualise Your Numbers

When a chart or graph helps tell the story, Fi generates visual summaries inline. You see the data presented clearly without needing to open a separate report.

Explain Changes Between Periods

Ask Fi why a figure moved, and it works through the movement period by period. Fi calculates the change for each month, names the main driver, and charts the trend. This works on your profit and loss, your cash flow, and your other financial reports.

Examples include:

  • "Explain my cash flow month by month for this year"
  • "Why did my net profit drop in July?"
  • "Which expenses drove the change in my margin this quarter?"

Fi ends with what to review next, such as a cost that spiked or a month with no revenue. See Flux Analysis and Cash Flow Forecasting.

Forecast Cash Flow and Test Scenarios

Fi projects your cash flow forward from your live data. You can then test a scenario in the same conversation and see how it changes the forecast.

  • "Forecast my cash flow for the next six months"
  • "What happens to my cash if my largest client pays 30 days late?"
  • "Can I afford a new hire at 4,000 GBP a month from June?"

See Cash Flow Forecasting.

Prepare Statutory Accounts and Management Commentary

Fi prepares statutory accounts, with the narrative report, for every country Fiskl covers, in the format each country requires. Fi works from your ledger, for any period. The narrative covers your principal activities, a business review, financial highlights and key performance indicators, liquidity, principal risks, and recommendations.

Find Anomalies, Duplicates and Fraud Risk

Fi checks your full ledger for entries that look wrong. It flags duplicate transactions, misclassified entries, tax errors, unexpected spikes, and missing categories, then suggests how to fix each one.

Fi also flags patterns that auditors investigate, such as negative expense balances, profit that is higher than revenue, or cash that does not follow profit. For each pattern, Fi shows the figures behind it, explains why it carries risk, and recommends what to check. Fraud-risk flags are for your review, and you or your accountant decide what happened. See Anomaly and Fraud-Risk Detection and Duplicate Detection.

Prioritise Overdue Invoices

Ask Fi which overdue invoices to chase first. Fi ranks your overdue invoices by risk, using the amount and how late each one is, and recommends the next step for each client.

Fi can draft the reminder email for you to review and send. When the client pays, Fiskl matches the payment to the invoice and to the bank transaction, and the invoice status updates automatically.

To send reminders on a schedule, see Set Up Automated Reminders.

Review a Period Before You Close It

Before you lock a period, ask Fi to review it. Fi checks for uncategorised transactions, duplicates, future-dated entries, and unmatched transfers. It compares tax treatment against similar transactions to find inconsistencies. It also reviews control accounts such as VAT, accrued liabilities, and loans, and checks that balances carry correctly into the next period.

You get a list of what to resolve before the period is ready to lock. When everything is resolved, lock the period. See Locked Period.

Correct Entries and Post Transactions

Fi can make changes to your books from the conversation. Ask Fi to fix an error it found, such as a wrong ledger account or tax rate. You can also ask Fi to post an entry. Fi makes the change in your ledger.

The Audit Log records every change Fi makes for you. See Audit Log.

Follow Guided Tutorials

For common tasks, Fi walks you through the process step by step. Instead of reading a help article and switching back to Fiskl, you follow along in the conversation while Fi guides each action. This is especially useful for tasks you perform infrequently, such as setting up recurring invoices or configuring tax settings.

Speak Your Language

Fi communicates in multiple languages with the same level of expertise. The system detects your language automatically and responds accordingly. Supported languages include English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, and many other major world languages.

Fi adapts to regional financial terminology and practices so you receive contextually appropriate guidance regardless of where you operate.

Tax and Regional Knowledge

Fi draws on indexed content from official tax authorities to answer region-specific questions. Fiskl scans and indexes guidance from government tax agencies on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule so Fi has access to current information.

Tax guidance is matched to your region automatically. When you ask a tax question, Fi surfaces the relevant information for your country alongside your account data and general accounting guidance. For example, if you ask about electric vehicle subsidies, Fi provides the answer specific to your country's tax authority.

Fiskl currently indexes content from the following tax authorities:

  • IRS (United States)
  • HMRC (United Kingdom)
  • IRAS (Singapore)
  • ATO (Australia)
  • SARS (South Africa)

The depth of tax content available depends on your Fiskl plan. All plans include core tax guidance for supported regions. Pro and Prime plans unlock deeper coverage such as professional guidance, legislative updates, and advanced rulings.

Fiskl is actively expanding coverage to additional regions. If your country's tax authority is not yet indexed, contact our support team β€” new sources can be added quickly.

Ask About a Specific Transaction

Ask Fi how a transaction should be taxed. Fi answers with links to the source guidance, the date the rule took effect, and the date Fiskl last verified it.

Check Nexus and Place of Supply

Fi checks your sales against US sales tax nexus rules and EU place-of-supply rules. For a US state, Fi uses your invoices to test the state's sales and transaction thresholds, and shows the state rate and how your product is taxed there. See Tax Intelligence, Research and Nexus.

tip

Ask Fi a tax question specific to your region. If the information is available in the knowledge base, Fi surfaces it automatically alongside your account data and general accounting guidance.

How Fi Works

When you ask a question, Fi follows an intelligent routing process to deliver the best answer.

  1. Classify your question β€” Fi determines the type of question you are asking: a knowledge question, a data analysis request, or a task you need help completing.
  2. Route to the right approach β€” Based on the classification, Fi takes one of several paths:
    • Knowledge base β€” For questions about Fiskl features, accounting concepts, or tax guidance, Fi searches the knowledge base and delivers a clear answer.
    • Data and reports β€” For questions about your financial data, Fi retrieves live information from your account and presents the results.
    • Guided tutorial β€” For step-by-step tasks, Fi combines knowledge base content with interactive guidance to walk you through the process.
    • Direct response β€” For straightforward questions, Fi responds immediately from its built-in expertise.
  3. Gather and reason β€” Fi pulls the relevant information, connects related data points, and builds a tailored response.
  4. Deliver your answer β€” You receive a response that may include explanations, data summaries, charts, or recommendations.

Fi maintains context throughout your conversation. Ask follow-up questions to drill deeper into any topic without repeating background information.

Getting the Best Results from Fi

Follow these practices for more useful answers.

Be Specific

The more detail you provide, the more targeted the response.

Instead ofTry
"How are my finances?""How does my revenue this quarter compare to last quarter?"
"Tell me about expenses""Break down my travel expenses for March by vendor"
"Show me reports""Show me my cash flow for the last three months"
"Tax question""What are the VAT thresholds for small businesses in the UK?"

Provide Context

Mention the specific feature, report, or time period you are working with. For example, "I'm looking at my March profit and loss and the travel expenses seem high β€” can you break them down?" gives Fi enough context to pull the right data.

Ask Follow-Up Questions

Fi remembers what you discussed earlier in the conversation. Build on previous answers:

  • "Can you break that down by client?"
  • "What about the same period last year?"
  • "Show me that as a chart"
  • "Which invoices are overdue?"

Give Feedback

Rate Fi's answers using the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons. Your feedback helps improve responses over time.

tip

Start a fresh conversation when you switch to a new topic. This helps Fi give you the most focused and accurate responses.

Your Data and Privacy

Your financial data stays private when you use Fi. Fiskl runs its AI on private, sandboxed models that are completely isolated from public AI training. Your questions, account data, and any information Fi retrieves during a conversation are never used to train AI models and are never accessible to other users or third parties.

Fi only accesses your Fiskl account data when you ask a question that requires it. The data retrieved is used solely to answer your question within that conversation. Fiskl does not store conversation content beyond what is needed to maintain context during your active session.

You can ask Fi about your revenue, clients, transactions, and tax situation with confidence that your information remains secure and private.

Current Limitations

There are some boundaries to be aware of:

  • Fi cannot access data from external systems outside Fiskl
  • Questions unrelated to Fiskl, accounting, or business management are outside Fi's scope
  • Very long conversations can reduce accuracy β€” start a fresh conversation when switching topics

Common Issues

Fi gives a generic answer instead of using my data

Make sure your question references specific data. For example, ask "What is my revenue for Q1?" rather than "Tell me about revenue." If Fi still does not pull your data, start a new conversation and try again.

Fi responds in the wrong language

Fi detects your language from the text you type. Write your question in the language you want the response in. If detection is incorrect, state your preferred language at the start of the conversation β€” for example, "Responde en espaΓ±ol."

Fi seems to lose context mid-conversation

Very long conversations can reduce accuracy. Start a fresh conversation when you switch topics or if responses become less relevant.

Fi does not have tax information for my country

Fiskl indexes tax authority content for several major regions and is actively expanding. Contact our support team to request coverage for your country β€” new sources can be added quickly.
