Getting Started as a Business Owner
This guide takes you through the essential steps to set up Fiskl for your business. Each step links to a guide with the full details.
Why These Steps Matter
Completing these steps automates your bookkeeping and gives you an accurate, real-time view of your business finances.
What you'll set up:
- Automatic transaction imports from your bank accounts
- Professional invoices that clients can pay online
- Accurate company, accounting, and tax details
- Access for your accountant
Essential Setup Steps
Complete these steps in order. Most take 5 to 10 minutes.
1. Connect Your Bank
Connecting your bank imports your transactions automatically, so you don't have to enter them by hand.
- Go to Banking in the left navigation
- Select Connect Bank
- Select your provider, then search for and select your bank
- Follow the secure authentication process on your bank's website
- Select which accounts to connect
If you take payments through Stripe, connect it too, from Integrations > Payments. Your Stripe payments, fees, and payouts then import automatically alongside your bank transactions.

2. Set Up Invoicing

- Invoice & Quote Settings — Set your default payment terms, invoice numbering, footer text, and the ways clients can pay you
- Templates and Brands — Set your invoice layout, colours, and fonts

3. Complete Your Company and Accounting Settings
Accurate business details make sure your invoices, reports, and tax filings are correct.
- Company Settings — Add your company name, address, logo, registration number, and time zone
- Accounting Settings — Set your fiscal year and accounting method (cash or accrual)
Your base currency is set when you register and can't be changed afterwards.
4. Set Up Your Taxes
Setting up your taxes makes sure tax is calculated and reported correctly from day one.
In Tax Management, add your tax agencies and tax rates, such as VAT, GST, or sales tax. Fiskl includes common tax rates for your region, so review them and add any you need.
Tax rules vary by country and region. Check with your accountant or tax advisor that your setup meets your local requirements.
5. Review Your Chart of Accounts
Your chart of accounts is the list of accounts your transactions are recorded in. Fiskl sets one up for you based on your region and industry, and most businesses can use it without changes.
Go to Accounting > Chart of Accounts to review it. You can add accounts for your business, and archive any you don't need.

- Ask your accountant for their firm's branch email
- Select the three dots next to your company name at the bottom of the left menu, then select External Access
- Select Invite Accountant
- Enter the branch email in Accountant Email, then select Send Invitation
