Handling Reconciliation Discrepancies

A discrepancy is any gap between what Fiskl holds for a period and what the bank statement shows. This guide explains what each kind looks like on the reconciliation screen and the action that resolves it.

Before You Begin

Upload the bank statement for the period. Without it Fiskl can tell you that the totals disagree, but not which transaction is responsible. See Bank Account Reconciliation for the upload steps.

Read the Difference First

The Difference tile compares the matched Fiskl transactions with the statement balance you entered. The lines under the tiles say what the number is made of:

  • Which side is higher, for example Fiskl shows $12.00 more than the bank.
  • How many statement lines are still to match and their total, and whether matching them accounts for the whole difference.
  • How many Fiskl transactions are not on the statement. These do not change the difference, but a period cannot be reconciled until they are dealt with.

If the lines say that matching everything still leaves an amount, the statement balance is wrong or a pair was matched wrongly. Start there before working through the cards.

Types of Discrepancy

Each card in Needs Attention names the problem and offers the fix. The left column is Fiskl, the right column is the bank statement.

Missing from Fiskl

What you see: a statement line on the right with Not in Fiskl.

Usual causes: bank fees, interest, a direct debit, a transfer that never reached Fiskl, or a transaction that was deleted.

Fix: select Add to Fiskl, choose the category and save. Fiskl creates the transaction and matches it with the line.

Not on the bank statement

What you see: a Fiskl transaction on the left with Not on your bank statement.

Usual causes: a manual entry made in error, a duplicate, a wrong date or amount, or a payment the bank has not processed yet.

Fix: decide which it is.

  • Entered in error or duplicated: select Delete from Fiskl and confirm.
  • Wrong date or amount: select Edit in Fiskl and correct it.
  • Not cleared yet: select Edit in Fiskl and move the date past the end of the period, so it is reconciled when it clears.
warning

A Fiskl transaction cannot simply be left for next month. Fiskl will not reconcile a period while one remains unmatched, because that would mark the ledger as agreeing with the bank when it does not.

Amount differs

What you see: a Fiskl transaction and a statement line on one row, joined by a dashed line, with Looks like … amount differs by $0.02 on both cards.

Usual causes: a typing error in a manual entry, a fee the bank added, or rounding on a currency conversion.

Fix: select Fix amount in Fiskl on the Fiskl card, enter the bank's figure and save. The cards then offer Match these; select it. The bank is the source of truth for cash, so the correction always goes on the Fiskl side.

tip

Do not delete the Fiskl transaction and add the statement line instead. You lose its category, attachments and history, and the new one arrives uncategorised.

Date differs

What you see: the same dashed pair, with Looks like … 2 days apart.

Usual cause: the bank processed the payment on a different day from the one entered in Fiskl. Fiskl allows up to seven days either side.

Fix: select Match these on either card. If you prefer the Fiskl date to match the bank, select Edit in Fiskl first.

Changed since matched

What you see: an orange Changed since matched badge on a card in Needs Attention.

Cause: the pair was matched earlier, then the Fiskl transaction was edited or deleted. Fiskl undoes a match as soon as its Fiskl side no longer agrees with the line.

Fix: treat the card as new. Match it again, fix the amount, or add the transaction if it was deleted.

Duplicate in Fiskl

What you see: every card is matched, yet the difference equals one transaction, and the breakdown says matching leaves an amount unexplained.

Cause: the same transaction exists twice in Fiskl, often after importing the same file twice. One copy matched the statement line, the other matched nothing but still counts.

Fix:

  1. Select Edit matches on the Auto Matched section to unlock its pairs.
  2. Find the duplicate on the Fiskl side and select Delete from Fiskl.
  3. Check the difference is now zero.

Statement line from another period

What you see: the count of hidden lines under the Bank Statement heading, or a card with an Outside period badge after you select Show 3 more days.

Cause: the statement file covers more than the period, or the bank dated a transaction across a month boundary.

Fix: a line dated a day or two outside the period that matches a Fiskl transaction can be matched as normal. A line that belongs to an earlier period is already reconciled there; leave it hidden.

Match Several Transactions as One

When the bank shows one amount that Fiskl holds as several, or the other way round, match them by hand:

  1. Select the checkbox on each card involved, on both sides.
  2. Check the bar at the bottom shows a zero difference between the two totals.
  3. Select Resolve.

The pair appears in Resolved with one green line.

Common Issues

The two cards look identical but Fiskl did not pair them

Suggestions cover amounts within a small tolerance and dates within seven days. A larger gap is treated as two separate items. Match them by hand with the checkboxes and Resolve.

I fixed the amount but the cards still show Needs Attention

After saving the amount, the cards change to Match these. Select it on either card to complete the match.

The difference changed when I ticked a card

The Difference tile and the breakdown follow your current selection, even before you select Resolve. Untick the card to see the saved state again.
