Bank Account Reconciliation

Reconciliation confirms that the transactions in a Fiskl bank or cash account match what the bank says happened. This guide walks through one period from start to finish, using an uploaded bank statement so Fiskl can do the matching for you.

How to do bank reconciliation in Fiskl ยท 1:27

Read the transcript
Open Accounting, then Reconciliation, and pick the bank account. Fiskl picks the period for you: the month after the last one you reconciled. The beginning balance is already there; it carries over from December. Type the closing balance from your statement. Fiskl shows the difference, and says in words which side is higher. If it's zero, you can reconcile now. It isn't, so upload the statement. Fiskl pairs each statement line with a transaction of the same amount, on the same day or up to a week either side. Whatever doesn't pair goes into Needs Attention, and every card says what it is. Extra in Fiskl, like a duplicate or a mistaken transfer? Delete it. Same payee, two amounts? Edit the Fiskl one to the bank's figure, then match them. Missing from Fiskl? Add it, and Fiskl matches it as you save. Zero difference, nothing left to check: select Reconcile. January is marked reconciled. Change anything in it later, and Fiskl flags it until you reconcile it again. Next month, the same steps: pick the period, check the balance, upload, clear the list.

Before You Beginโ€‹

  • Download the statement for the period from your online banking as CSV, OFX, QIF or QBO. The file needs a date, a description and an amount for each line.
  • Note the closing balance on the statement. You enter it in Fiskl and it is the figure the reconciliation is checked against.
  • Make sure the transactions for the period are in Fiskl, either from a bank feed or an import. A statement upload never creates ledger transactions by itself.

Start the Periodโ€‹

  1. Go to Accounting > Reconciliation.
  2. Select the bank or cash account from the account picker. The Reconcile button appears once an account is selected.
  3. Select Reconcile. Fiskl opens a new period.

The first period for an account starts on the date of its earliest transaction and ends at the end of that month. Each later period starts the day after the previous one ended. You can change the end date on the latest period and the start date on the first.

Is this your first reconciliation, with years of history in the account?

Start one long period that covers everything up to the last month you know the bank and Fiskl agreed:

  1. Start the period and leave the default start date.
  2. Set the end date to the end of that last agreed month.
  3. Enter the closing balance from that month's statement.
  4. If the difference is zero, select Reconcile. Every older transaction is now reconciled in one step.

From then on you can reconcile month by month.

Enter the Statement Balanceโ€‹

Select the pencil on the Statement Balance tile and enter the closing balance from your statement. The value saves when you move away from the field. The Difference tile then shows how far Fiskl and the bank are apart, and a line underneath says which side is higher.

info

The IN and OUT tiles show the number and total of money-in and money-out transactions in the period. Once a statement is attached they count only the transactions that have been matched.

Upload the Statementโ€‹

Without a statement attached, Fiskl treats every transaction in the period as cleared and checks only the closing balance. A card above the transactions says so and offers two ways forward. Upload is the one to take whenever you have a statement, because it is the only way Fiskl can tell you which transaction is wrong.

  1. Select Upload Statement, on the card or at the top of the page.
  2. Choose the file. Fiskl maps the date, description and amount columns and shows a preview. Check the mapping and select Start Import.
  3. Select View Transactions on the confirmation. Fiskl returns to the period and matches the statement lines against the transactions.

Matching pairs each statement line with a Fiskl transaction of the same amount, first on the same date and then within seven days either side. The result is shown in three sections.

SectionWhat it holds
Needs AttentionTransactions and statement lines with no match. This is your work list, and it opens by default.
ResolvedPairs you matched or created yourself.
Auto MatchedPairs Fiskl matched. Collapsed by default; select Edit matches to change one.

Each matched pair sits on one row with a green line between the two cards. The left card is the Fiskl transaction, the right card is the statement line.

Statement lines outside the periodโ€‹

A statement often covers more than the month you are reconciling. By default only lines dated inside the period are shown, and the count of hidden lines appears under the Bank Statement heading. Select Show 3 more days to widen the window by three days either side. Lines in the widened band carry an Outside period badge. Select Period only to go back.

Work Through Needs Attentionโ€‹

Every card in Needs Attention says what Fiskl thinks it is and offers the action that fits. Work down the list until the section is empty.

A statement line that is not in Fisklโ€‹

The card says Not in Fiskl. This is usually a bank fee, interest or a payment that never reached Fiskl.

  1. Select Add to Fiskl. The transaction form opens with the name, date and amount filled in.
  2. Choose the category and select Save.

Fiskl creates the transaction and matches it with the line in one step.

A Fiskl transaction that is not on the statementโ€‹

The card says Not on your bank statement. A period cannot be reconciled while one of these remains, so decide what it is:

  • Entered by mistake: select Delete from Fiskl and confirm.
  • Wrong date or amount: select Edit in Fiskl and correct it.
  • Not cleared yet, such as a cheque the bank has not processed: select Edit in Fiskl and move the date past the end of the period. It is then reconciled in the period it clears.

Two cards that look like the same transactionโ€‹

When a transaction and a statement line nearly match, Fiskl places them on one row with a dashed line between them and explains the gap, for example Looks like NOTION LABS on 28/09/2026, amount differs by $0.02.

  • Amount differs: select Fix amount in Fiskl on the Fiskl card, correct the amount and save. The bank figure is the right one. After saving, the cards offer Match these.
  • Date differs: select Match these on either card.
tip

Correct the Fiskl transaction rather than deleting it and adding the statement line. Deleting loses the category, any attachments and the transaction's history.

Changed since matchedโ€‹

A card with an orange Changed since matched badge was matched earlier, but its Fiskl transaction has since been edited or deleted. Fiskl has undone the match. Treat the card like any other in Needs Attention: match it again, fix the amount, or add the transaction.

Matching by handโ€‹

If Fiskl's suggestion is wrong, select the checkbox on a Fiskl card and on a statement card. A bar at the bottom shows both totals and the difference between them. When the difference is zero, select Resolve. You can select more than one card on a side, for example two Fiskl transactions that the bank paid as one.

Reconcile the Periodโ€‹

Read the lines under the tiles. While the difference is not zero they say what makes it up: how many statement lines are still to match and their total, and how many Fiskl transactions are still not on the statement. When a matched set does not account for the difference, the line says so and points you at the statement balance or at a pair that was matched wrongly.

When everything matches, the Difference tile shows a tick and zero, Everything matches appears underneath, and Reconcile appears inside the tile.

  1. Select Reconcile.
  2. Fiskl marks the period Reconciled and returns to the list.

Select Save as draft at any time to keep your progress and come back later.

warning

Statement lines left in Needs Attention do not stop you reconciling. Before you select Reconcile, check that Needs Attention is empty, or that the lines left in it belong to another period.

After Reconcilingโ€‹

  • Select View report on the list to see or export the reconciled period.
  • If a transaction inside a reconciled period is later added, edited or deleted, the period's status changes to Needs attention. Open it, resolve the change and reconcile it again.

Common Issuesโ€‹

The Reconcile button is missing

Reconcile appears in the Difference tile only when the difference is zero and every Fiskl transaction in the period is matched. Enter the statement balance if you have not, then clear the Fiskl side of Needs Attention.

Every line is matched but the difference is not zero

The breakdown under the tiles says how much is unexplained. Check the statement balance you typed first. If it is right, a pair was matched wrongly or a transaction is duplicated in Fiskl. Select Edit matches on Auto Matched to unlock pairs and look for two Fiskl transactions matched to lines that are really one.

I uploaded the statement but the page still shows a plain table

The upload did not attach. The file chip next to Upload Statement at the top of the page shows when a statement is attached. Upload it again, and check the confirmation says how many lines were imported.

The statement has lines from last month

They are hidden by default and counted under the Bank Statement heading. Lines dated a few days outside the period can be shown with Show 3 more days. Lines that belong to an earlier period are already reconciled there and can be ignored.
