Finishing Transactions
Finish marks a categorised transaction as checked by you. It is the single action that turns an automated categorisation into a decision Fiskl can learn from. This page covers the main workflow on the transactions list, where you finish a whole merchant at once and create its rule in the same step, and the other ways to finish when you need them.
What Finish doesโ
A transaction that the automation categorised carries a confidence score and belongs to the automation. Finishing it clears that score and makes the categorisation yours. Nothing else about the transaction changes: the account, amount and date stay as they were.
Two things follow from a finished transaction:
- History repeats it. The next uncategorised transaction with the same merchant name is given the same account and tax rate, without asking the AI.
- It counts towards a rule suggestion. When you have finished the same merchant the same way at least twice, Fiskl proposes a rule.
Transactions you categorise by hand and save are already yours. Finish matters for transactions the AI or your history categorised first.
Transactions placed by one of your rules need no Finish either. A rule is your own instruction, so the transaction arrives already finished and shows an R badge in the AI column instead of a confidence score.
Finishing is a review step, not a formality. Check the account before you finish, because a finished transaction becomes the precedent for every later one from that merchant, and a rule created from it is applied without question.
The main workflow: review strip, then Finish and create ruleโ
Above the transactions list of any bank or card account, a strip reads, for example, Review 12 automated transactions in this account. It appears whenever this account has automated transactions waiting for you, and it is where most of the work happens. Opened, it shows one chip per merchant waiting, with a count, plus any rules Fiskl is ready to suggest and a count of transactions in view that a rule placed.
Take Amazon as the worked example. The AI has categorised nine Amazon purchases to Office Supplies over the last two months, all still waiting for you.
- In the left sidebar, select Accounting > Transactions
- Select the bank or card account
- On the review strip, select Show. It opens into chips such as Amazon ยท 9 and Guardian Media Digital ยท 3
- Select Amazon ยท 9. Fiskl switches the period to All, newest first, filters the list to Amazon and selects all nine transactions
- Check the accounts shown. If one is wrong, open it, correct the account, select Finish, and it drops out of the selection
- On the selection bar, select Finish and create rule, then confirm
Fiskl finishes the nine transactions and opens the rule dialog prefilled: Name contains AMAZON, direction Money out, account Office Supplies. If you have an Amazon vendor, it is selected for you; if not, Create New Vendor is ready with a tidy name. Adjust anything you like and select Save.
What that one step changes:
- The nine transactions are yours. They no longer show a confidence score, and the Amazon chip disappears from the strip
- Within about a minute, every other uncategorised Amazon transaction in the company is placed by the rule, with the R badge
- Every future Amazon import is placed by the rule on arrival, already finished. The AI is never asked about Amazon again, and the AI usage line under Settings > AI & Automations > Automations falls accordingly
- The rule appears under Settings > AI & Automations > Rules, where you can edit or delete it later
If you only want to finish, select Confirm as Finished instead. The transactions are finished, history learns them, and after the second one Fiskl suggests the rule on the strip as Add rule, which opens the same dialog.
Select Hide to collapse the strip to one line. Fiskl remembers your choice.
Finish one transactionโ
- In the left sidebar, select Accounting > Transactions
- Open the transaction
- Check the account, and the tax rate if you use one
- Select Finish
The Finish button appears only on transactions the automation touched. A transaction you categorised yourself shows Save instead.
After you save or finish, Fiskl may ask Always book "X" as Y? Select Create rule to open the rule dialog, or Don't offer again to switch the prompt off for your user.
Finish many transactions with the AI Processed filterโ
When you would rather work through a list than a merchant at a time, the AI Processed filter shows every transaction the automation categorised or matched that you have not finished.
- In the left sidebar, select Accounting > Transactions
- Select the bank or card account
- Toggle the AI Processed filter on
- Optionally, enter a merchant name in the search box to narrow the list
- Review the accounts shown
- Select the checkbox at the top of the list to select every row, or select individual rows
- Select Confirm as Finished on the selection bar
- Select Finish to confirm
Every selected transaction is finished with the account it already has. If some are wrong, correct those first and then finish the rest.
The AI confidence filter narrows the list further to high, medium or low confidence. Reviewing the low-confidence transactions first is the quickest way to find the ones most likely to need a correction.
Finish from Settingsโ
Settings > AI & Automations > Rules lists the same merchants across every account under merchants waiting to be finished. Select Review them to open the transactions list with those rows ready, and the review strip open. Finish them there, and the suggestion appears on your next visit.
Common Issuesโ
There is no Finish button on my transaction
The transaction was not categorised by the AI or by history, so there is nothing to confirm. Either you categorised it yourself, it is still uncategorised, or one of your rules placed it, in which case it shows an R badge and is already finished. Set the account and select Save if it needs changing.
The review strip is not showing
It appears only when the account has automated transactions waiting, a rule ready to suggest, or transactions a rule placed in the current view. If everything is finished, there is nothing for it to show. If you collapsed it, select Show on the one-line version.
I finished a transaction but the next one from the same merchant was still sent to the AI
History matches on the transaction name exactly, after trimming spaces and ignoring case. Bank feeds often add a changing reference to the name, so two transactions from the same merchant may not have identical names. A rule using Name contains with the stable part of the name catches every variation. Use Finish and create rule the next time that merchant is waiting. See Categorisation Rules and Suggestions.
I finished several transactions but no rule was suggested
A suggestion needs at least two finished transactions whose names share the same merchant token and were given the same account. Check that both are finished and that they went to the same account. Also check merchants Fiskl looked at but will not suggest under Settings > AI & Automations > Rules, which explains when a merchant name is shared by two different kinds of purchase. You can always create the rule yourself with Finish and create rule.
