Categorising a Selection of Transactions

Categorise runs auto-categorisation over transactions you choose, right away, and shows you what happened to each one. Use it after adding a rule, after finishing a merchant, or whenever a batch of uncategorised transactions is waiting.

Before You Begin

  • Auto Categorisation is turned on under Settings > AI & Automations > Automations
  • To include the AI, AI Categorisation is also turned on there. Without it, Categorise still runs your rules and history, which are free
  • You need accounting write permission

Categorise selected transactions

  1. In the left sidebar, select Accounting > Transactions
  2. Select the bank or card account
  3. Toggle the Uncategorised filter on to see only transactions without an account
  4. Select the transactions to categorise, or select the checkbox at the top to select them all
  5. Select Categorise on the selection bar
  6. Leave Also ask the AI about anything left ticked to send remaining transactions to the AI, or untick it to use rules and history only
  7. Select Categorise to confirm

Fiskl categorises up to 100 transactions per click. Transactions that already have an account are left untouched, even if selected.

Reading the result

The result groups every selected transaction by what happened to it.

GroupMeaning
CategorisedAn account was written. Each row says why: Your rule, As before (your history), or AI with its confidence
Proposed by the AI, not appliedThe AI suggested an account with confidence below 80%. Nothing was written. Tick the ones that are right and select Accept
Not categorisedNothing matched, or the AI could not tell. These stay uncategorised for you
SkippedIn your locked period, already categorised, or part of a match

A row you accept from the Proposed group is written with the AI's own confidence, so it shows amber in your list and still needs Finish. Every categorised or proposed row has a Create rule shortcut for the merchants you want settled permanently.

info

Accepting proposals is how a lower-confidence AI answer reaches your books. Fiskl never writes one on its own. Your acceptances are recorded, which is how the 80% threshold is checked against real decisions over time.

The AI daily limit

Each company can put a limited number of transactions in front of the AI per day through Categorise. The confirmation dialog shows how many remain. When the limit is reached, Categorise still runs your rules and history over the whole selection, and the result says the AI was not asked. The scheduled automation does not count against this limit.

Categorise everything instead

Categorise works on transactions you select. To re-run rules and history over every uncategorised transaction in the company, go to Settings > AI & Automations > Automations and select Retry under Retry categorisation. This runs on the next scheduled pass, within about a minute, and is free unless you tick Also ask the AI again.

Common Issues

The Categorise button is not on the selection bar

It appears only when the selection includes at least one uncategorised transaction that is not part of a matched transfer. Toggle the Uncategorised filter on and select again.

The AI checkbox is greyed out

AI Categorisation is switched off for the company. Turn it on under Settings > AI & Automations > Automations. It is a separate switch from Auto Categorisation because it is the only part that sends transactions to a model.

Most rows came back as "Nothing matched"

Your rules and history had nothing for those merchants and the AI was not asked, either because it is switched off, you unticked it, or the daily limit was reached. Tick the AI option and run again, or add rules for the merchants that recur.

A row I accepted still shows amber

That is expected. It carries the AI's original confidence so you can tell it apart from a rule or history placement. Select Finish on it once you are satisfied, and it becomes yours.
