Switching Billing Models

This page explains what to do when you need to change a client's billing model in Atlas.

Billing Models Cannot Be Changed Directly

You cannot switch a client's billing model after the account is connected. A Charge Us client cannot be converted to Client Pays, and a Client Pays client cannot be converted to Charge Us, within the same account.

If you need to change the billing model, the approach depends on which direction you are moving.

Charge Us to Client Pays

If you want a Charge Us client to take ownership of their account and pay their own subscription, use the ownership transfer process.

How Ownership Transfer Works

  1. Initiate the ownership transfer from Atlas
  2. Billing stops for your firm on that account
  3. The account enters archive mode
  4. The client signs in and accesses all of their existing data
  5. The client sets up their own subscription to become the account owner
  6. The relationship between your firm and the client is removed

After the transfer, the client owns the account fully and manages their own billing with Fiskl. There is no remaining connection between the two accounts.

If the client wants to re-engage your practice after the transfer, they invite you through the standard process from External Access in their Fiskl Dashboard. This creates a new Client Pays relationship.

When to Use Ownership Transfer

This is useful when a client relationship changes — for example, a fully managed client moves to an advisory arrangement and wants to take control of their own account and billing. The client keeps all their data without interruption.

Client Pays to Charge Us

There is no direct path to convert a Client Pays account to Charge Us. Because the client owns the account in the Client Pays model, your firm cannot take over ownership or billing.

If both parties agree to move to Charge Us:

  1. Disconnect the existing Client Pays relationship
  2. Add the client as a new Charge Us account from Atlas
  3. The client creates a new account using your Charge Us invitation link
  4. Set up the new account and migrate data as needed
warning

This creates a new Fiskl account. The client's original account and data remain under their ownership. Plan for data migration before starting this process.
