Filed Returns and Corrections

When you file a return, Fiskl locks its figures and keeps a record of the filing, the payment, and your documents. This page explains that record, what happens when a transaction changes in a filed period, and how to correct a return.

Before You Begin

  • File the return first. See Prepare and File a Return.
  • To correct a return you need tax write permission. To file a correction, withdraw a filing, or record a disclosure, you need tax submit permission. See Who Can Do What.

The Filed Record

Open a return from the Filed table in the returns list to see its filed record:

  • Figures as Filed — A locked snapshot of the figures you filed. It does not change when your ledger does
  • Filings — Each filing for the period, such as the original and any correction, marked In force or Withdrawn
  • Adjustments Included — The adjustments that went into the return
  • Declaration — The declaration you confirmed, with your name and the date
  • Payment — What is payable to the tax agency, or due from it, and whether it is paid
  • Documents — The return as filed, the acknowledgement, payment confirmation, and any evidence
  • Record Retention — The date until which you must keep the record, under that country's rules

If transactions in the period change after you file, the record also shows Changes Since Filing.

To add a file later, select More > Add Document.

Lock the Period

A filed return is already locked. After filing, Fiskl also offers to set your Lock Period to the end of the filed period, which stops changes to any transaction in that period. Select Set Lock Period, or Not Now to leave it.

The Lock Period is separate from the filed return, and optional. See Locked Period.

Paying What You Owe

When you file, Fiskl records the amount as payable to the tax agency, or as due back to you for a reclaim. A correction records only the change, as its own entry.

The Payment card shows the amount, the due date, and what is still outstanding. To record the payment, match it from its bank transaction in Transactions. For UK VAT paid by direct debit, the card shows when HMRC collects it.

Changes to a Filed Period

Fiskl never blocks a change to a transaction dated in a filed period. Instead:

  • The editor shows a notice that the period is already filed, and where the change will be reported.
  • Depending on the country, the change goes into your next return, needs a corrected return, or is too old to report.
  • The transaction shows Not reported until it is reported in a return.

If you delete or void an invoice in a filed period, Fiskl asks Did This Invoice Reach the Customer? If it did, create a credit note instead, so the filed return stays right. If it did not, you can delete or void it.

If the period is also inside your Lock Period, saving a change needs accounting close permission and a note.

Correct a Return

If you find an error in a filed return:

  1. Open the filed return.
  2. Select Correct This Return.
  3. Answer the questions about the error, such as how it happened and when you found it.
  4. Follow the route Fiskl shows.

Fiskl chooses the route from the country's rules, its time limits and thresholds, and your answers. You do not choose it. The route is one of these:

RouteWhat you do
Goes into your next returnSelect Continue to the Next Return. Fiskl adds an adjustment to your next return
File a corrected returnPrepare the corrected return, file it on the portal, then select Mark Corrected Return as Filed
Re-file this return before the deadlineIn countries that allow it, re-file the return and select Mark Replacement as Filed
Report the error to the tax authoritySelect Record Disclosure and record the disclosure you made, such as an error correction notified to HMRC

When a corrected or replacement return is in force, the original return shows Amended.

warning

For UK VAT, errors above HMRC's limit must be reported to HMRC separately. Fiskl tells you when an error is over the limit, and you record the disclosure in Fiskl after you make it.

Withdraw a Filing

If you marked a return as filed by mistake, select More > Withdraw Filing and enter a reason. The return goes back to the To File table. The Lock Period stays as it is.

You cannot withdraw a return submitted to HMRC, or one whose payment is already matched.

Common Issues

A transaction I changed shows Not reported

It is dated in a filed period. Fiskl reports it in your next return, or tells you that the period needs a corrected return. Open the next return and check Transactions from Earlier Periods and Not Included in This Return.

I cannot save a change in a filed period

The date is also inside your Lock Period. Saving into the Lock Period needs accounting close permission and a note. Ask someone with that permission, or move the Lock Period. See Locked Period.

Withdraw Filing is not available

The return was submitted to HMRC, or its payment is already matched. Use Correct This Return instead.
