Two Types of Expenses in Fiskl
1. Standalone Expenses
These are expenses recorded independently of your accounting transactions.
Key features:
- Can be created via web dashboard or mobile app (with OCR)
- Don't impact accounting until reconciled
- Can be attached to invoices for client billing
- Useful for quick capture, team expense submissions, and billable expenses
2. Direct Accounting Expenses
These are expenses recorded directly in your ledger accounts.
Key features:

Components of an Expense
Both types of expenses typically include:
- Amount
- Category
- Date
- Description
- Images (e.g., receipts)
- Client (optional, for billable expenses)
- Vendor (optional)
Billable Expenses
Expenses become billable when:
- You assign a client when creating the expense
- You add the expense to an invoice
Once an expense is added to an invoice, it can't be used on other invoices.
